Speaking to the cursed old man at dusk
To awaken Skeletron, travel to the far brick facade of the Dungeon and speak with the Old Man standing guard outside. Initiating conversation after nightfall at seven-thirty in the evening presents a "Curse" dialogue option that transforms the elder into the floating skeletal behemoth.
Time is strictly limited during this encounter. If night passes and dawn arrives at four-thirty in the morning, Skeletron's behavior switches into an enraged state identical to the Dungeon Guardian, accelerating toward your character to deliver fatal contact blows. Once defeated, the curse is broken and the Clothier can move into town; re-summoning the boss in the future requires equipping a Clothier Voodoo Doll and slaying the tailor at night.
Decoupled skeletal hands and the spinning skull charge
Skeletron enters the fight divided into three components: a massive central skull and two floating skeletal hands that sweep aggressively across the screen. In Classic mode, the main head features 4,400 life, 10 defense, and an initial contact hit of 32.
The creature alternates predictably between two combat states. In its primary state, the skull hovers above while both hands flail downward to slap the player. Periodically, the skull lets out a loud roar and begins spinning its teeth in a relentless charging drill. During the spin, the head's defense drops to zero in Classic mode, offering an ideal opportunity to deal heavy damage if you have sufficient running speed or double jumps to stay just out of reach.
Homing skull projectiles and hand defense in expert mode
Expert mode escalates the boss's durability to 8,800 life and a contact strike of 70, with Master mode reaching 11,220 life and 106 damage. Higher difficulties also introduce a protective barrier mechanic: while the skeletal hands remain intact, the central skull enjoys a high defense enhancement that deflects almost all incoming damage.
Furthermore, destroying a hand causes the skull to begin launching volleys of homing purple skulls whenever it is not spinning. When both hands perish, the skull fires dense spiraling streams of projectiles. The essential survival tactic in higher difficulties is destroying both hands equally before shifting focus onto the head, keeping a circular movement loop around the floating skull to lead its homing projectiles harmlessly away.
Unlocking the dungeon and freeing the clothier
Defeating Skeletron removes the subterranean barrier guarding the Dungeon, granting safe passage into its brick corridors without being obliterated by the Dungeon Guardian. Inside lie locked Golden Chests, Shadow Keys, the Muramasa, and the Cobalt Shield.
Skeletron himself yields several notable spoils: the Book of Skulls spell tome at 10.5%, the dual-hook Skeletron Hand grapple at 12.2%, and the rare Chippy's Couch vanity furniture at 14.3%. In Expert and Master modes, opening his Treasure Bag grants the Bone Glove accessory, which automatically throws bouncing bones at nearby adversaries whenever you strike with any primary weapon.
Trivia
- Descending into the Dungeon depths prior to defeating Skeletron summons nearly invincible Dungeon Guardians who deliver lethal contact blows.
- During his spinning skull attack in Classic mode, Skeletron's head defense drops by 10 points.
