Blizzards and deer things in the frozen tundra
Deerclops crosses into your world directly from the frozen wilderness of Don't Starve. During a Blizzard in the Snow biome, the creature has a natural chance to arrive unprompted precisely at midnight, heralding its arrival with a screen-shaking roar.
You can also summon the one-eyed monoped on demand at any hour in the Snow biome by crafting a Deer Thing at a Demon Altar or Crimson Altar. The recipe calls for three Flinx Fur gathered from Snow Flinxes, one Lens, and five bars worth of Demonite Ore or Crimtane Ore. Uniquely among bosses, Deerclops does not automatically disappear upon your death; as long as the icy weather persists and you sprint back to the tundra quickly, the beast continues roaming the terrain waiting for a rematch.
Ice spikes, hurled debris, and shadowy hands
In Classic mode Deerclops enters combat possessing 7,000 life, 10 defense, and a base collision strike of 20. Despite walking on a single leg, the boss covers horizontal ground rapidly and attacks with a diverse suite of arctic maneuvers.
His primary offense involves slamming the ground to send rolling waves of sharp ice spikes that ripple across the earth. Jumping over these ripples is essential, but lingering in the air invites his secondary attack: scooping up massive boulders of packed snow and ice that arc through the sky before raining downward. Whenever you draw close to strike with melee weapons, he periodically roars, inflicting the Slow debuff and leaving your character vulnerable to consecutive hits.
Anti-cheese mechanics and the frozen immunity zone
Challenging the beast in Expert difficulty brings his health to 11,900 and his contact blow to 40, with Master mode scaling up to 15,173 life and 60 damage. More drastically, higher difficulty modes activate persistent shadow hands that crawl from the earth and hover through the atmosphere to home in on your position.
Deerclops incorporates dedicated anti-evasion programming. If you attempt to float directly over his skull on ropes, minecart tracks, or tall platforms, he roars angrily and encases himself in an invulnerable aura that completely negates incoming damage until you return to normal engagement angles. Staying on the ground at a moderate distance while weaving through falling rubble with Magiluminescence or Hermes Boots offers the most consistent defensive flow.
Chester companions, Lucy the Axe, and weather magic
Victory over Deerclops provides an eccentric arsenal from the Don't Starve crossover. The Eye Bone drops at 33.3%, summoning Chester—a mobile four-legged chest acting as a portable piggy bank that follows your travels. Melee users can obtain Lucy the Axe at 25%, an articulate woodcutting hatchet that talks during tree felling.
Ranged fighters gain the Pew-matic Horn at 25%, which expels random household debris as ammunition. Magic users acquire the Weather Pain at 25% to conjure bouncing tornadoes that pierce through groups of enemies, while summoners secure the Houndius Shootius sentry at 25%. In Expert and Master modes, the Treasure Bag grants the Bone Helm, which summons shadowy tendrils to whip nearby adversaries.
Trivia
- Deerclops was added to Terraria in update 1.4.3 as part of an official crossover event with Klei Entertainment's Don't Starve Together.
- Unlike almost every other Pre-Hardmode boss, Deerclops does not despawn when all players die unless his target leaves the Snow biome entirely.
