High-altitude reconnaissance scouts scanning the globe

The Martian Probe is a rare mechanical scout that roams the outer two-thirds of the world during Hardmode, primarily in Space and high surface elevations after Golem is defeated. Outfitted with 500 life and 5 defense, it patrols silently while projecting a green holographic sensor cone downward. It does not possess aggressive weaponry, dealing just 5 contact damage if bumped.

Preventing the extraterrestrial alarm from sounding

When a player enters the probe’s scanning beam, its sensor shifts from green to an alarming red hue, and the machine attempts to flee off-screen. If it escapes into the upper atmosphere, it triggers the full-scale Martian Madness invasion event. Players wishing to avoid the event must destroy the probe quickly before it accelerates away, whereas those seeking alien loot should intentionally let it escape into orbit.

Trivia

  • Allowing a detected Martian Probe to escape into the sky triggers the Martian Madness invasion.
  • Martian Probes spawn only in the outer two-thirds of the world, never in the central third around original spawn.
