Graveyard excavation and wide soil clearing
Crafted at an Iron Anvil or Lead Anvil within the eerie mist of a Graveyard mini-biome, the Gravedigger's Shovel requires twelve iron or lead bars alongside 3 wood. Unlike conventional digging implements, this specialized spade cleaves through a 3x3 square grid of soft terrain blocks with each swing. It rapidly excavates dirt, mud, sand, snow, clay, silt, and slush, allowing builders to carve tunnels and terraform landscapes far quicker than standard early mining tools. It also functions as a broad melee weapon, dealing 12 base melee damage with 3.5 knockback.
Excavator utility versus pickaxe mining roles
While remarkably fast at clearing soft geological layers, the shovel cannot break stone, subterranean ores, or dungeon bricks, meaning it cannot replace standard pickaxes like the Gold Pickaxe. Instead, players keep it in their hotbar to rapidly dig hellevators through surface dirt layers or farm caches of clay and sand for building projects. When swung against aggressive zombies or slimes, its wide arc provides respectable early defense. Reforging it to Legendary maximizes swing size, attack speed, and impact for both self-defense and excavation.
Trivia
- Its tooltip proudly asks the player 'Can you dig it?', referencing a classic pop culture phrase.
- The shovel cannot break any block that requires more than zero percent pickaxe power beyond soft soil types.
