Piranha in Terraria

Enemy Banner: Piranha Banner

Just one of these sharp-toothed fish can easily end a life. Luckily, they tend to swarm their victims in large groups! Life is grand.

Bestiary entry and numbers read from Terraria 1.4.5.8 itself.

Voracious aquatic swarms infesting subterranean water pockets

Piranhas inhabit subterranean water pools in the Cavern layer and the Underground Jungle. Equipped with 30 life and 2 defense, a Piranha swims toward submerged explorers, inflicting 25 contact damage, which escalates to 50 in Expert and 75 in Master. They frequently spawn in small shoals, swarming any adventurer who accidentally falls into flooded sinkholes.

Fishing out grappling hooks and navigational compasses

Submerged melee combat against Piranhas is dangerous without flippers, making it far safer to stand on the edge of the pool and clear them with bows, thrown grenades, or yo-yos. Defeated Piranhas drop the essential Hook at a 3.32% rate for crafting grappling hooks, the Compass at 1.33%, and the vanity Robot Hat at 0.4%.

Trivia

  • Piranhas lose swimming velocity rapidly when attempting to attack players standing just above the water line.
