Cavern monster hunting and horizontal coordinate tracking
Acquired as a rare 1.25% drop from underground foes including Undead Viking warriors, subterranean Piranha shoals, and cold Snow Flinx herds in the ice biome. In Expert mode, the drop chance rises to 2.5%. When carried, the Compass displays horizontal positioning in feet east or west from the world center. This readout helps spelunkers map out subterranean tunnel grids, track biome boundaries, and navigate back toward central shafts during deep mining expeditions.
Field exploration and GPS navigational assembly
Surveying horizontal coordinates assists players in recording temple locations, jungle boundaries, and ocean borders across vast maps. Miners can write down surface markers to locate floating islands above specific points without burning through gravitation potions. Operating passively from the inventory, it leaves accessory slots free for survival gear. At a Tinkerer's Workshop, the Compass combines with a Depth Meter and either a Gold Watch or Platinum Watch to build the GPS, progressing toward the Cell Phone.
Trivia
- Compass coordinates measure distance relative to the horizontal midpoint of the map rather than the original spawn point.
- The horizontal coordinate readout is broadcast to all allied players standing in close proximity.
