Elder Slime

Elder Slime in Terraria

Town NPC

Older, though not necessarily wiser, the other slimes look up to the Elder Slime. If it survived this long, it must know something!

Bestiary entry and numbers read from Terraria 1.4.5.8 itself.

Town NPCs charge less when they are happy: the game lowers their prices for loved and liked biomes and neighbours and raises them for disliked and hated ones.

Drops

Elder Slime drops nothing in the game's drop rules.

Unlocking the subterranean trembling chest

The Elder Slime is a distinguished aristocratic gelatinous pet complete with a top hat, monocle, white mustache, and wooden cane. Unlike other companions who stroll into town voluntarily, this elderly gentleman must be liberated from a subterranean trap deep within the earth.

While spelunking through the Cavern layer, players may encounter an Old Shaking Chest hopping around across the stone floor like an energetic monster. Unlike typical wooden chests that can be opened freely, this bouncing container is securely locked. To unlock it, the player must hold a Golden Key retrieved from the Dungeon or dropped by a Dungeon Slime. Interacting with the shaking chest consumes the key and frees the Elder Slime from his confinement.

Distinguished pet manners and town integration

Once released from the chest, the Elder Slime begins his journey toward civilization. Like all town slimes, he functions as a friendly domestic pet rather than a demanding human resident. He holds 250 life and 15 defense and can comfortably share a bedroom with any established town resident, bypassing standard room limitations.

He spends his days tottering through town corridors, tapping his cane politely and mingling with other villagers. Interacting with him allows players to give him an affectionate pet, causing him to adjust his classy hat with a satisfied chime.

Golden keys and subterranean salvage

Because unlocking the Old Shaking Chest requires a genuine Golden Key, players must conquer Skeletron and explore the Dungeon corridors beforehand, or defeat a stray Dungeon Slime near the entrance. Carrying a spare key while mining in the deep Caverns ensures you can recruit him the instant his bouncing chest is spotted.

Bringing the Elder Slime into your settlement adds to the total population needed to invite the Princess and marks essential progress toward The Great Slime Mitosis achievement, which requires gathering all eight town slimes in a single world.

Trivia

  • The Old Shaking Chest hops toward players like a passive creature rather than sitting stationary on the ground.
  • Unlocking the bouncing chest permanently consumes the Golden Key from the player's inventory.
