Traveling merchant acquisition and erratic hit effects
Purchased from the Traveling Merchant for 50 gold (50 gold) after the world has entered Hardmode. Firing the raygun expends 16 mana to loose slow-moving energy beams that hit for 100 base magic damage and 6 knockback. Upon striking a monster, the projectile triggers a roll among dozens of unpredictable behaviors: damage multiplication up to tenfold, drastic projectile speed shifts, random trajectory deflections, sudden teleportation, or spawning additional secondary laser beams.
Chaotic boss melting and reliability trade-offs
As the Hardmode counterpart to the pre-Hardmode Gray Zapinator, the Orange Zapinator offers wild damage ceilings. When paired with the Meteor Helmet set bonus, which reduces its mana cost to zero, or magic accessories, a fortunate damage-proc sequence can vaporize The Destroyer in a matter of seconds. However, its sluggish Very slow cycle with a 36 use time and random nature make it risky for precision encounters.
Trivia
- Its sprite design is modeled directly after the 1989 orange version of Nintendos NES Zapper light gun peripheral.
- Rare random hit rolls can temporarily cause enemy hitboxes to freeze in place or bounce erratically across the arena.
