Town NPCs charge less when they are happy: the game lowers their prices for loved and liked biomes and neighbours and raises them for disliked and hated ones.

Chances are for one kill, before Luck, Rate of fire or banners change anything. The Modes column says in which difficulties the game lists the drop.

Dawn arrivals and sunset departures

The Traveling Merchant does not settle permanently in houses. Instead, each morning at 4:30 AM has a 22.12% chance for him to arrive, provided at least two other humanoid town NPCs are currently living in the world. He wanders town grounds until 6:00 PM, at which point he departs into the wilderness until his next random visit.

He defends himself using a Revolver or a Pulse Bow in Hardmode. If slain by monsters or hazards, he drops the Peddler's Hat with a 100% drop rate of 100%. He traverses dangerous lands with 250 vitality and 15 defense, inflicting 10 contact damage.

Rotating inventory of oddities and gizmos

His shop offers a randomized selection of four to six rare items each visit, making regular check-ins highly worthwhile. Key inventory items include information accessories like the DPS Meter, Lifeform Analyzer, and Stopwatch (all components of the Cell Phone), combat tools like the Gray Zapinator and Orange Zapinator, the Celestial Magnet, the Ammo Box, and the Companion Cube.

He also sells exotic vanity costumes, Dynasty Wood, team blocks, and rare decorative paintings that cannot be obtained from any other merchant, making him an architectural staple.

Wandering trades without housing ties

Because he is a nomadic merchant without permanent housing, he does not participate in the NPC happiness system. His prices remain static regardless of biome or neighboring residents, and he does not sell biome Pylons. His arrival remains a daily highlight for players searching for elusive building blocks, vanity suits, and unique paintings throughout their playthrough.

Expediting visits with resting beds

Players seeking specific items like the DPS Meter or Zapinator can speed up day cycles by resting in a bed. Sleeping in a bed accelerates in-game time by five times, allowing days and nights to pass quickly so players can rapidly check for dawn merchant arrivals, significantly cutting down the real-world time required to complete the Cell Phone recipe.

Trivia

  • In Hardmode, his defensive weapon upgrades from a basic Revolver to the high-tech Pulse Bow.
  • He sells exclusive paintings that cannot be acquired from any other vendor in the game.
