Giant Tortoise in Terraria

Enemy Banner: Giant Tortoise Banner

No one takes the giant tortoises seriously. Not until they come hurtling through the air, a spinning, spiky ball of death.

High-speed spinning aerial strikes through jungle canopies

The Giant Tortoise represents one of the most feared hazards across the Hardmode Jungle and Underground Jungle. Possessing 470 health and 30 base defense, this reptilian brute crawls slowly until acquiring a target. It then tucks into its shell and launches into a violent ricocheting leap, dealing 80 contact damage in Classic, 160 in Expert, and 240 in Master mode.

Gathering reinforced shells for heavy melee plating

While spinning through the air, the tortoise gains heavy knockback resistance and elevated defensive protection, making it dangerous to attack head-on with short melee weapons. Keeping a ceiling barrier or using knockback-heavy weapons like shotguns halts its charge safely. Each fallen tortoise has an 8.33% chance to yield a Turtle Shell, the vital component required for crafting Turtle armor.

Trivia

  • While spinning in mid-air, the Giant Tortoise curls completely into its shell and bounces off solid surfaces.
  • A single strike from its spinning dive can eliminate lightly armored players in Master mode.
