Ice Mimic in Terraria

Enemy Banner: Mimic Banner

Talking to a chest doesn't cause craziness, but if the chest answers back, it may cause death! It still contains rare treasure, regardless!

Bestiary entry and numbers read from Terraria 1.4.5.8 itself.

Deceptive chest disguises beneath the frozen tundra

In the underground Snow biome during Hardmode, the Ice Mimic camouflages itself as a standard frozen chest until an unsuspecting explorer draws close or strikes it. Unlike genuine containers, it cannot be opened by right-clicking and will instead jolt awake, springing into violent leaping bounds that hit with 30 base contact damage. Spelunkers can reveal its predatory presence from safety by firing long-range projectiles into unopened chests or drinking a Hunter Potion to highlight hostile creatures in red.

Renewable equipment for crafting Frostspark Boots

Exploring worlds with poorly generated ice chests can leave spelunkers missing vital traversal gear. Fortunately, the Ice Mimic acts as a farmable source for several essential underground snow treasures. Defeating one grants an 11.9% opportunity for Ice Skates and 11.9% for Flurry Boots, enabling the assembly of Frostspark Boots. Furthermore, hunters may obtain the Blizzard in a Bottle (11.9%), Ice Blade (11.9%), Snowball Cannon (11.9%), or the decorative Toy Sled pet item (5%).

Trivia

  • Ice Mimics only appear in the cavern layer of the tundra once Hardmode has been initiated.
  • Unlike biome mimics, standard ice mimics can be knocked back using high-impact melee weapons.
