Airborne flutterers of deep cavern jungle canopies

The Moth is an uncommon flying insect found drifting through cavern depths of the Underground Jungle during Hardmode. Unlike frantic hornets, this gentle flyer flutters slowly through the humid air with 1,000 health and 28 defense. Contact with its wings inflicts 70 base damage in Classic, 140 in Expert, and 210 in Master mode.

Farming rare butterfly dust for early hardmode wings

Because of its high health pool, taking down a Moth requires sustained ranged or magic fire before it drifts into close proximity. Defeating one grants a 50% chance to obtain Butterfly Dust. Taking this dust to a Mythril Anvil alongside Soul of Flight creates Butterfly Wings, offering excellent vertical acceleration and extended flight time.

Trivia

  • Despite its high vitality, the Moth flies at a gentle, predictable speed that makes it easy to dodge in wide open caverns.
  • Not to be confused with Mothron, which spawns exclusively during the Solar Eclipse.
