Eclipse flights and swooping ovipositors
When the moon darkens the sun during a Solar Eclipse, Mothron emerges as the event's most dangerous predator once all three mechanical bosses have been conquered. This monstrous lepidopteran passes through solid blocks effortlessly, hovering with undulating wingbeats. She enters combat with 6,000 life in Classic, scaling to 12,000 in Expert and 18,000 in Master mode, defended by 30 base defense.
Her combat pattern combines sudden lunging charges with reproductive swarming. While pursuing players, she periodically pauses in mid-air to line up a high-velocity dash, dealing 80 contact damage in Classic, climbing to 160 in Expert and 240 in Master. Brushing against her wings can wipe out a fragile character in moments, making spatial awareness during an eclipse paramount.
Smashing the clutch before hatching
In addition to her charges, Mothron periodically touches down on terrain or platforms to lay clusters of large eggs. If left undisturbed, these eggs hatch after a brief countdown into aggressive Baby Mothrons that swarm your character from all directions, creating an overwhelming aerial distraction.
Preventing this swarm requires prioritizing the eggs the instant they are deposited. Piercing armaments or broad swinging blades such as the Death Sickle or True Night's Edge can cleave through the clutch while continuing to damage the mother. When Mothron winds up for her aerial dash, juking sharply along a vertical or diagonal angle lets you slip past her trajectory, as her high horizontal momentum prevents her from executing tight turns mid-lunge.
Forging blades with broken hero steel
Hunting Mothron is an essential milestone for melee weapon progression. Her most famous offering is the Broken Hero Sword (25% drop rate), the core ingredient needed to forge the True Excalibur and True Night's Edge, which together combine to forge the iconic Terra Blade at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil.
Once Plantera has been defeated in the world, she also gains the ability to drop The Eye of Cthulhu (33.3%), a premier yoyo with infinite spin duration. Aesthetically inclined explorers can also collect Mothron Wings (5%) or the rare Wings of Evil (6.67%), outfitting their character with moth-like plumage.
Trivia
- Mothron is an overt homage to the classic cinematic kaiju Mothra, featuring identical egg-laying and larval mechanics.
- Since update 1.4.1, Mothron spawns immediately after defeating the three mechanical bosses rather than requiring Plantera's defeat.
