The Tortured Soul is a rare humanoid apparition that wanders through the molten caverns of the Underworld during Hardmode. Shuffling along ash banks with 400 life and 20 defense, he leans on a cane while muttering bitter grievances. Striking him in self-defense is easy, as his feeble cane swings deal only 14 base damage, but slaying him is a tragic mistake for aspiring town builders.
Sprinkling purification powder to awaken the tax collector
Rather than destroying this miserable spirit, players should dust him with Purification Powder purchased from the Dryad. Cleansing his demonic corruption immediately transforms the Tortured Soul into the Tax Collector town NPC. Once housed in a valid room, he collects periodic taxes from all other residents, generating steady passive income for the player. In Master mode, his health reaches 1,200 life with 20 defense.
