Drops
Old Man drops nothing in the game's drop rules.
Guarding the cursed brick dungeon threshold
The Old Man is a tragic, cursed sentry stationed permanently at the grand brick entrance of the Dungeon upon world generation. Unlike standard town residents who seek shelter in constructed wooden homes, the Old Man cannot be assigned housing, nor does he wander across player villages.
He possesses 250 life and 15 defense. Unlike combat-ready villagers who defend their homes with weapons, he possesses no offensive attacks whatsoever. When wild zombies or demon eyes approach his vigil at the dungeon doorway, he cowers in terror, completely dependent on player assistance or natural brick barriers to survive the night.
The midnight summons and the guardian peril
Interacting with him during daylight hours produces mournful warnings, imploring the player not to enter the dark halls until his master is vanquished. If an impatient explorer ignores his pleas and descends past surface depth into the depths below, terrifying Dungeon Guardians appear at tremendous speed, instantly dealing lethal strikes that defeat even late-game heroes in a single blow.
To lift this lethal safeguard, players must speak with the Old Man after sunset between 7:30 PM and 4:30 AM. Interacting with him during the night reveals a Curse option. Selecting this prompt sacrifices the Old Man in a flash of dark magic, instantly summoning the multi-armed boss Skeletron to wage battle against the player.
Lifting the skeletal curse into clothier freedom
Conquering Skeletron permanently breaks the ancient hex that grips the brick fortress. Defeating the boss dispels the deadly Dungeon Guardians forever, granting players safe passage to explore the winding corridors, loot locked gold chests, and rescue the Mechanic.
Furthermore, defeating his skeletal master frees the Old Man soul from torment. Cured of his demonic possession, he is reborn and moves into any vacant player house as the dapper Clothier, where he sells decorative tailoring supplies and vanity garments. Should Skeletron defeat the player during the midnight duel, the Old Man respawns peacefully at the dungeon doorway the following morning to await another challenge.
Trivia
- Venturing past depth level zero into the Dungeon before lifting his curse summons lethal Dungeon Guardians that fly through solid blocks.
- If the player fails to slay Skeletron before dawn arrives, the boss enrages and instantly defeats the player before vanishing.
