First companion and material recipe consultation

The Guide is the first companion players encounter when a new world is generated. Standing beside the player at world spawn, he provides beginner survival tips and essential direction for exploring caverns and building shelters.

His most valuable utility is the Crafting option in his dialogue menu. Placing any item tagged as a Material into his interface slot reveals every craftable item that can be created with it, alongside the required crafting station and complete ingredient list. This consultation makes him a vital resource for discovering weapon recipes and armor sets without external reference.

Forest housing and green cap drops

He claims the first habitable wooden shelter constructed by the player. During night hours and zombie raids, he pulls out a wooden bow to fire arrows at approaching undead, defending his quarters with 250 life and 30 defense.

Consult the preference table above for his full biome and neighbor affinities; housing him in the Forest with liked neighbors provides quick early-game happiness bonuses. If born under the name Andrew, his death yields a unique Green Cap at a rate of 100%.

The underworld sacrifice and voodoo doll binding

Behind his helpful advice lies a dark cosmic curse: a dark curse binds his spirit directly to the master of the world's depths. Slaying Voodoo Demons in the Underworld yields a Guide Voodoo Doll. Equipping this doll allows players to damage him directly with player weapons.

More importantly, casting the Guide Voodoo Doll into boiling lava lakes while deep in the Underworld instantly slays the Guide in a violent sacrifice. This rite awakens the Wall of Flesh, beginning the climactic battle that releases ancient spirits and triggers Hardmode upon victory. The Guide must be alive and present in the world for this underworld ritual to succeed.

Trivia

  • The name Andrew belongs to Terraria creator Redigit, which is why Guides with that specific moniker drop the Green Cap.
  • Throwing a Guide Voodoo Doll into lava while the Guide is deceased consumes the doll without summoning the Wall of Flesh.
