Sunny meadow capture and display jars
Monarch Butterflies spawn abundantly across surface Forest biomes during sunny daytime weather. Captured with a Bug Net or Golden Bug Net, this orange insect can be combined with an empty bottle to assemble a Monarch Butterfly Jar for indoor decoration, or paired with 50 stone blocks at a Heavy Assembler to carve a Butterfly Statue. Carrying a bug net along open plains during noon hours yields numerous fluttering specimens without requiring bait traps.
Angling limitations and critter economics
Possessing 5% bait power, the Monarch Butterfly has the lowest bait rating among all catchable butterflies in Terraria. This low value makes line snaps and lost bait frequent during fishing trips. The Sulphur Butterfly and Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly offer superior angling performance. Consequently, selling surplus Monarchs to merchants for 5 silver or keeping them in decorative jars is generally preferable to using them as bait.
Trivia
- It is the most common butterfly species found drifting across grassy surface biomes.
- Delivers 5% bait power, making it the weakest catchable butterfly for fishing.
