Surface zombie hunting and early defense

Dropped with a 2% chance by common Zombie variants roaming the surface landscape at night, increasing to nearly 4% in Expert mode. Equipping the Shackle grants +1 defense. While a single point of armor seems modest, early characters gain useful damage mitigation against bats, cave slimes, and demon eyes during initial nights before complete metal armor suits are hammered out. Because zombies attack in large packs during new moons, collecting shackles happens naturally during early survival.

Magic cuffs synthesis and reforge defensive value

The Shackle serves as a key crafting component at a Tinkerer's Workshop, combining with a Band of Starpower to forge Magic Cuffs. This upgrade restores mana whenever the wearer sustains damage, benefiting pre-Hardmode mages facing intense mana drain. Players can collect extra shackles and reforge them with the Goblin Tinkerer to secure the Warding modifier, gaining 4 bonus defense for minimal coin investment.

Trivia

  • The Shackle is one of the earliest accessories obtainable during a character's first nocturnal surface survival run.
  • It can also be utilized at an anvil alongside iron bars to hammer out The Beheaded's Cuirass armor piece.
