Sniping through underground jungle foliage

Navigating the Underground Jungle means constantly watching the air for hovering Hornets. Unlike ground crawlers, these winged insects maintain a distance from the player and fire ranged stingers that inflict the Poisoned debuff. With 48 life in Classic and 26 base contact damage (jumping to 52 in Expert and 78 in Master), they can quickly whittle down explorers while staying out of melee reach. Piercing arrows, yoyos, or rapid firearms make short work of their flight patterns by pushing them backward.

Harvesting stingers and ancient armor pieces

Hornets are among the most frequently farmed subterranean creatures thanks to their resource drops. They yield Stingers at a 66.7% rate, an indispensable ingredient for crafting essential jungle armaments like the Blade of Grass, Thorn Chakram, Amazon, Hornet Staff, and Poison Darts. In addition, they drop the Bezoar at a 1% chance, granting complete immunity to poison and serving as a key ingredient for the Ankh Charm. Lucky spelunkers may also assemble an entire Ancient Cobalt armor set directly from hornets: the helmet, breastplate, and leggings each drop at 0.33%.

Trivia

  • Hornets can fly into pools of liquid honey without drowning, though their speed is substantially reduced.
  • Different visual hornets exist in the underground jungle, including mossy and larger variants.
