Skeleton Merchant in Terraria

Town NPC

Most skeletons are out for blood, but not the Skeleton Merchant. He just wants to sell supplies, such as rare torches and yo-yo gear.

Drops

Skeleton Merchant drops nothing in the game's drop rules.

Encountering the cavern peddler in the dark

The Skeleton Merchant does not move into constructed houses. Instead, he wanders unlit expanses of the Cavern layer, spawning randomly according to hostile monster spawn mechanics while remaining completely friendly to the player. Spelunkers using Hunter Potions will notice his silhouette highlighted in green rather than monster red, signaling a friendly peddler. When the player leaves his vicinity, he simply despawns into the dark earth.

Cavern predators treat him as a target, prompting him to defend himself by hurling sturdy bones at approaching monsters. He survives subterranean caverns with 250 health and 30 defense, while dealing 10 contact damage against subterranean beasts that stumble into him.

Lunar cycles and underground yoyo stock

His inventory shifts dramatically according to the phases of the moon. Yoyo enthusiasts seek him out for the Format:C and Gradient yoyos, as well as the Yoyo Glove accessory and colored Counterweights that cycle colors each night. Combining the Yoyo Glove with Counterweights at the Tinkerer's Workshop creates the versatile Yoyo Bag accessory. During a full moon, he sells the Magic Lantern, an enchanted light pet that floats above the player and reveals nearby treasures through solid stone. On blood moons, he stocks the slap hand weapon for comical knockback.

Spelunker supplies and daylight arrows

Beyond trick yoyos, he provides essential mining provisions including Torches, Glowsticks, and Spelunker Glowsticks. Spelunker Glowsticks illuminate hidden ore deposits and chests through solid stone walls when tossed into deep chasms, saving expensive potions during early mining expeditions.

His projectile stock alternates with the surface clock: during surface daytime hours he sells stacks of standard Wooden Arrows, while during surface nighttime hours he switches to Bone Arrows, providing convenient subterranean resupply without returning to town.

Underground trade routes and safety perimeters

Because subterranean predators view him as prey, meeting him in dangerous cavern zones requires quick action. Placing nearby torches and temporary wood blocks prevents bats and armored skeletons from interrupting trade transactions, keeping the wandering merchant safe while players browse his lunar wares.

Trivia

  • He is immune to the Poisoned and Bleeding debuffs common in subterranean biomes.
  • Bats and skeletons will attack him if he enters their line of sight in unlit caverns.
