Dye Trader

Dye Trader in Terraria

Town NPC

Eccentric and rather snobby to a fault, the Dye Trader has expensive tastes. He is passionate about the materials used in the dyes he sells.

Color pigments, strange flora, and arrival conditions

The Dye Trader is an exotic merchant dedicated to color customization and fabric design. To encourage him to move into town, players must prepare an unoccupied house, conquer at least one pre-Hardmode boss, and hold any dye item, dye ingredient, or Strange Plant in their personal inventory. Gathering Yellow Marigolds, Pink Prickly Pears, or Blue Berries from surface biomes easily fulfills his arrival criteria.

He has 250 life and 15 defense. Despite his delicate silks and theatrical flair, he does not flee when monsters breach town walls. Instead, he brandishes a curved Arabian-style blade to slash aggressively at intruders in close quarters.

Dye vats, silver tints, and botanical quests

His shop provides the essential Dye Vat crafting station, allowing creative players to combine plants, shells, and colored liquids into hundreds of vivid dyes for armor and accessories. He also stocks Silver Dye and Team Dyes for multiplayer team identification.

In Hardmode, he offers special botanical trade quests whenever players bring him Strange Plants found growing on wilderness terrain. Turning in these rare plants rewards bundles of animated special dyes, including Reflective Dye, Living Rainbow Dye, and Mirage Dye, which apply mesmerizing visual effects to vanity sets.

Desert dye bazaar and strange plant exchanges

The Dye Trader favors warm desert air that complements his colorful turban and woven textiles. Refer to the preference table above to inspect his full environmental and neighbour rankings.

Settling his store in the Desert near the Arms Dealer yields optimal price cuts on the Dye Vat, silver dyes, and specialty colorants while supporting the local Desert Pylon. Pairing these vendors together also makes the Desert Pylon available very early in the game without requiring difficult building projects. If slain in combat, he has a 12.5% chance to yield his swift Exotic Scimitar.

Trivia

  • His Exotic Scimitar is one of the highest-damage pre-Hardmode broadswords available before defeating evil biome bosses.
  • Strange Plant turn-ins in Hardmode always award two bottles of special dye per flower delivered.
