Happiness: where it likes to live
| Biomes | Neighbours | |
|---|---|---|
| Loves | Dryad | |
| Likes | the Jungle | Party Girl, Princess |

Town NPCs charge less when they are happy: the game lowers their prices for loved and liked biomes and neighbours and raises them for disliked and hated ones.

Staging eight townsfolk for his arrival
The Painter arrives once at least eight other town residents occupy suitable housing in the world. Town pets, traveling merchants, and the Old Man do not count toward this census count, but any standard humanoid townsfolk will qualify. If his home is destroyed or he falls in battle, he checks for vacant valid rooms each morning after dawn.
In battle, he defends himself by firing bouncy paintballs from his Paintball Gun. When defeated by hostiles or environmental hazards, he has a 12.5% chance to drop the Paintball Gun at 12.5%, and drops Jim's Cap at a rate of 100% if his name happens to be Jim. He enters the world with 250 life, protected by 15 defense, dealing 10 base contact damage to enemies that run into him.
Coating the world in color and echo glass
His primary utility revolves around creative construction, selling basic Paintbrushes, Paint Rollers, and Paint Scrapers, alongside Spectre upgrades during Hardmode. He stocks a broad palette of standard and deep paints, illuminant coatings to make tiles glow in the dark, negative paint for inverted palettes, and Shadow Paint for pitch-black silhouettes.
Builders rely heavily on his Echo Coating, which turns solid blocks, furniture, and walls completely invisible until viewed through an Echo Chamber or Spectre Goggles. He also sells decorative wallpapers, several of which rotate based on seasonal calendar events like Christmas and Halloween.
Jungle studio retreats and pigment supplies
Expansive architectural projects demand extensive supplies of paints, coatings, wallpapers, and tools. Consult the preference table above to review his complete environmental ratings and neighbor preferences.
Constructing his art studio within the vibrant greenery of the Jungle near preferred friends yields significant price discounts on paints, rollers, and decorative canvases while activating the local Jungle Pylon. His inventory shifts according to the calendar seasons, moon cycles, and biome locations.
Trivia
- His name Jim references former Re-Logic artist Jim Tommy Myhre, who wore the hat dropped upon his defeat.
- Echo Coating sold in his shop allows builders to hide wiring mechanisms and support blocks completely from sight.
