Drops
Wizard drops nothing in the game's drop rules.
Rescuing the tied spellcaster from subterranean depths
In Hardmode, players exploring the Cavern layer can discover the Bound Wizard tied up with ropes among the rocks. Equipping a Lifeform Analyzer helps spot him in the dark subterranean gloom. Speaking with him frees his bindings, allowing him to move into any vacant town room.
He defends himself by hurling bouncing Chaos Balls of arcane energy at encroaching monsters. He protects his scholarly robes with 250 health and 15 defense, dealing 10 contact damage to hostiles that get too close.
Arcane conduits, spell tomes, and the Crystal Ball
The Wizard is an essential vendor for magic-focused players. He sells the Crystal Ball, which grants the Clairvoyance buff and functions as a crafting station for magical potions and decorative blocks. The Clairvoyance buff provides plus 5% magic damage, plus 2% magic critical chance, and reduces mana costs.
He also stocks Empty Spell Tomes (used to craft Golden Shower, Cursed Flames, and Crystal Storm), Greater Mana Potions, the Ice Rod, the Bell, and the Harp. His wares serve as the foundational bedrock for early-Hardmode magic builds, allowing spellcasters to craft potent projectile tomes before challenging mechanical bosses.
Hallowed arcane spires and mystical components
Mages frequently seek out the Wizard to purchase the Crystal Ball, Empty Droppers, Spell Tomes, and the Ice Rod. Consult the preference table above for his full environmental ratings and roommate scores.
Constructing an arcane tower for him in the Hallow near preferred companions keeps his magical supplies and Greater Mana Potions inexpensive while activating the Hallow Pylon for swift travel.
Clairvoyance preparation before boss battles
Experienced mages place a Crystal Ball inside their central boss arenas alongside Campfires and Heart Lanterns. Right-clicking the sphere grants the Clairvoyance buff for several minutes, providing critical offensive boosts before summoning mechanical bosses or celestial pillars, enhancing both spell damage and mana efficiency.
Trivia
- The Clairvoyance buff from his Crystal Ball increases magic damage, critical strike chance, and reduces mana cost.
- His Ice Rod creates temporary ice blocks in mid-air that players can stand on.
