Crafted at the Tinkerer's Workshop by combining a Cobalt Shield and an Obsidian Skull, the Obsidian Shield grants +2 defense along with total immunity to knockback and fiery blocks like Meteorite or Hellstone. By preventing hitstun and pushback, it keeps weapon attacks and flight trajectories stable during chaotic skirmishes. Later in progression, it combines with the Ankh Charm to form the Ankh Shield, or with silver components for Silver Shield.
Combat positioning and staple tank loadouts
Securing knockback negation in late Pre-Hardmode reshapes close-quarters combat, letting warriors swing broadswords against Wall of Flesh without being pushed into lava. It pairs effectively with mobility boots and wings to ensure smooth evasive maneuvering without mid-air disruption. Reforging to Warding adds +4 defense, yielding 6 defense from a single accessory slot and cementing this shield as a premier defensive foundation throughout early and mid Hardmode.
Trivia
- The shield protects against hot surface blocks but does not reduce damage taken from standing in liquid lava.
- It visually fuses the molten obsidian skull crest directly onto the cobalt shield frame.
