Angling with the underground Truffle Worm
Duke Fishron is a monstrous mutant pig-fish hybrid lurking within the depths of the ocean. Summoning this aquatic apex predator requires a specialized bait known as the Truffle Worm, which crawls rarely through the subterranean glowing mushroom biome and must be scooped up quickly with a Bug Net. Casting a fishing line into the coastal waters with the worm hooked on your line immediately pulls the ferocious beast out of the sea. The Duke enters the fight boasting 60,000 health in Classic, rising to 78,000 in Expert and 99,450 in Master mode.
Boundary discipline is critical when baiting the beast. If the player drifts away from the ocean edge and crosses into the adjacent forest or desert biome, Duke Fishron instantly enrages. In this enraged frenzy, its speed surges dramatically, its defensive resistance hardens, and its charges become nearly impossible to outrun. The entire battle must be contained strictly over the coastal surf.
Detonation bubbles and Sharkron water spouts
In its primary stage, Duke Fishron executes a predictable assault rhythm: five direct dashes, an explosive bubble barrage, five more dashes, and a volley of water tornadoes. The bubble rings track your position slowly but can be popped out of the air by striking them with any weapon or projectile, neutralizing their detonation hazard. The water spouts drop into the ocean surface or platforms, erupting into tall swirling geysers that fling flying Sharkrons directly at the player.
Evading the Duke's lunges requires vertical agility and horizontal momentum. Because the boss holds a sturdy baseline armor rating of 50, dodging while firing backwards with weapons that feature high velocity or homing capabilities—such as the Tactical Shotgun with Chlorophyte Bullets or the Magnet Sphere—keeps damage rolling. Asphalt runways built above the waves provide outstanding foot speed for outpacing his charges.
Shadow cloaking and the third phase teleport rush
Once the boss's vitality falls to half health, its eyes burn yellow, its skin darkens, and its aggression multiplies. Dashing sequences tighten from five lunges down to three, interspersed with a swirling spiral charge that scatters rings of bubbles across the sky, followed by a homing typhoon that spawns an enormous Mega Sharknado. Direct collision with the Duke inflicts 100 base contact damage in Classic, climbing to 140 in Expert and 210 in Master mode.
In Expert and Master difficulty, depleting the Duke past fifteen percent health initiates a terrifying third phase. A dense blue fog blankets the entire screen, cloaking Fishron in near-total invisibility save for his glowing yellow pupils. He teleports directly behind the player before executing swift, relentless charges in a strict counting cadence: one dash followed by a teleport, two dashes followed by a teleport, then three dashes followed by a teleport. Counting these dashes aloud lets you time Shield of Cthulhu or Master Ninja Gear dashes perpendicular to his approach, completely bypassing his strikes.
Reaping Fishron Wings and aquatic armaments
Defeating the oceanic terror rewards players with some of the most potent gear in Hardmode. Highly coveted are the Fishron Wings at a 6.67% rate, granting top-tier ascent speed and unrestricted flight capabilities through liquid. The encounter also yields an arsenal of five signature weapons: the chain-seeking Flairon flail, the five-arrow Tsunami bow, the ricocheting Razorblade Typhoon spellbook, the Tempest Staff minion summon, and the close-range Bubble Gun.
Collectors can claim the grand Duke Fishron Trophy at 10%, the ferocious Duke Fishron Mask at 14.3%, and the Master mode exclusive Pork of the Sea shrimp mount at 25%. While technically accessible right at the dawn of Hardmode, taking on Fishron with early equipment is an extreme challenge that rewards skilled players with endgame power early.
Trivia
- Duke Fishron can be challenged at the very beginning of Hardmode if the player manages to capture a Truffle Worm.
- During his third phase in Expert mode, his dashes follow a strict pattern of one, two, and three charges between teleports.
- His concept originated as an April Fools' joke before being officially implemented into the game.
